How to connect Yamaha P45 to Garageband
Hi, I have a Yamaha P45 and Garageband in my Mac. My Yamaha keyboard has a USB Type B output (USB to host). My Mac, has a USB C entry. I never used garage band but when you have to choose a track type, it recommends a MIDI type for a keyboard. In this case, not sure if my Yamaha P45 has MIDI exit in that USB Type B output and if I need to buy any intermediate interface to convert from audio to Midi. Anyone out there who can enlighten me?

Hi - Do you want to record audio from the piano [its own internal piano sounds] in to GarageBand, or just use the piano's MIDI output to play sounds from piano Instruments in GarageBand? [AFAICT you should be able to do either].. If you just want to play GB's [piano] Instruments from the keyboard, try connecting the P45 to the computer via USB [with a USB B->C adaptor, if needed], and see if it triggers GB Instruments -- if it doesn't, go to GB Preferences > Audio/MIDI and hit Reset MIDI Drivers, then try again.. For anything more elaborate than that.. Well, details on the P45's MIDI/Computer connections are supposedly found in these two Yamaha documents, which cross-reference each other in a very un-helpful way.. https://usa.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/4/329494/computer_en_rm_m0.pdf https://usa.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/8/333228/p45_en_om_a0.pdf If you're completely new to both GB and MIDI in general, I've linked to one of our basic GarageBand courses, which explains a bit [see video # 2, below]..

Connect the USB cable from the keyboard to your computer. Connect the MIDI Out port to a MIDI In port on a MIDI interface, and connect the MIDI In port on the keyboard to a MIDI Out port on the MIDI interface using MIDI cables. Connect the MIDI interface to your computer.

In this case, as far as I can tell from the Yamaha P45 website page's specs and documentation it seems like the P45 keyboard only has the USB connection, and no dedicated MIDI in/out DIN connections [the spec sheet specifically indicates No under MIDI Connectivity], so apparently any MIDI data flow would have to be via USB hookup [if it works with a USB B->C adaptor]. https://usa.yamaha.com/products/musical_instruments/pianos/p_series/p-45/specs.html#product-tabs Since this thread was started quite a while ago I would assume the OP has figured out the hookup by now..
