I always enjoy David Earl courses. His relaxed manner and experimental bent keep things engaging. I'm obviously over a decade too late, having only just gotten FM8, but this course was very useful to get up to speed. I LOVED the brief history of FM synthesis at the start; that by itself was nearly enough for me to give the course five stars. One thing that I didn't much like is the sound design examples. I just don't think any of them were inspiring sounds. These could easily have been so, I feel, if David had given more thought to them in advance. I mean, the examples were certainly enough to illustrate FM8 in use, but it would have been more exciting to have sounds that I would want to use. The course has a bit of an identity crisis too - is it an 'Explained' series or is it a 'Sound Design' series? It seems to be more the former, less the latter, but it doesn't quite commit to either. It would have been a good idea to have a separate series just focusing on sound design. Nonetheless, this was really a great way of becoming familiar with a relatively complex synthesizer.

If you are interested in knowing what Alchemy can do beyond being a standard synthesizer, this is the course to take. Honestly, I will probably never use 80% of the techniques explored in this course. Physical modeling? I'd rather use Sculpture. FM synthesis? Retro Synth or the EFM1 are more straightforward. Nonetheless, I love how David raises your awareness of the possibilities buried in Alchemy. In particular, the stuff on Spectral and Additive Synthesis did actually have me thinking, 'ok, I might get useful sounds from these techniques'. The possibilities for creating interesting soundscapes with the Morph Pad is another big takeaway. More generally, David sheds light on what spectral synthesis, granular synthesis, additive synthesis and formants actually are! (Still can't claim to fully 'get' spectral or granular though, but I can sound like I know what I'm talking about by using 'grains' and 'bins' in the right context). Cheers for this course, David. It was a fun 2 hours.

Excellent course. Really clear explanations. To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of the sound of the EVOC20 but I really want to understand all the tools in my Logic Pro toolkit. This course is perfect for getting a comprehensive overview of the VST.

Very well explained, possibly he could have gone into more detail on how he created the sounds within Logic, but overall a great learning tool.

If you are an expert you will probably lke this course. If not, then this course is incomprehensible. If you are using Ableton, and using a PC, almost none of the material is of any help.

Wow! Apple drums demystified. Great course if you really want to know how it all works.

Thanks, I'd always seen it there but didn't want to go down the rabbit hole. Very useful tool. Please Apple, can we have a jazz drummer? Huge omission.
